Lights Dimming and eventually Circuit Trips

A couple days ago my cat got stuck in my ceiling while we were doing bathroom renovations. We were able to get her out by taking out a recessed light located in the kitchen. The next day I noticed the lights kept dimming every so often but would stay on. Now a week later the lights will only stay on for 5 to 10 min and the circuit for the kitchen light will eventually trip. I know anything could have happened since the cat was up in the ceiling but does anyone have any ideas of things I can try before calling an electrician? I did some research and sounds like a short circuit? Thanks in advance!

My starting point would be the can that you removed---pull it again and check the connections---sounds like a loose wire nut.
