lighting question

I have an issue with two outside lights on my house, and I'm hoping to get some advice on how to solve the problem. There is an upstairs porchlight and one by the basement door. The problem is that to turn on the basement light the upstairs light has to be on. Would there be a simple way to fix that?
Eventually I will be puling down the ceiling and paneling in the basement to remodel it, and at that time I can run a new circuit. But in the meantime... I haven't really investigated the wiring yet so I don't know how the circuit is wired.

Thanks.

This could be simple to change.. all depends on how these are wired.

Check at the switch and the easy to get at fixture downstairs.

lighting question

most likely the wrong wire was pigtailed inside the upstairs switch. Instead of tying in the feed for the downstairs lights to the hot side of the switch they pigtailed off the load side of the switch. Could be a number of other things but to me this seems most likely.

x2

I am guessing further that this was done on purpose....to be able to turn on the downstairs light without actually going downstairs.
