Light won't come on

Hello all,

I had a light that just quit working. It was old, so I bought a new one. This one won't work either (I've installed a number of new lights over the years). I also tried replacing the switch but, when this didn't work, decided to check the power with a circuit tester. There is power at the switch and power to the wires that directly connect to my new light. What could be wrong here? I don't mind getting an electrician in, but at their hourly rate, don't want him or her racking up the dollars while he tries to figure it out.

Thanks for any and all help.

How did you test power? Non contact tester? Hot to ground?

You may have power but it also need a path back to complete the circuit. You need to check hot to neutral (black to white) at the light.

Test all recepticals in the vicinity. The problem could be anywhere on the circuit.

Also, describe the wires/cables in the light box and sw box.

Light won't come on

I used one of those circuit testers where there is a black wire and red wire and when you connect them to the black and white wires in your box a light comes on if power is present.
I'm at work right now so can't follow up on this, but the outlets in the area all work okay.
I'll update on the wires in the box when I can.
Thanks for your help.
