Light switch suddenly trips the breaker

My basement lights are controlled by two light switches.

One of the switches works (turns lights on and off)

The other switch when operated trips the breaker when turning lights on.

This all started happen suddenly - no renovations or changes at all to any of the walls or addition of other electrical appliances.

I take it the issue is with the switch? What would cause this and how can I fix it?

Kill the power and check for a loose connection on the switch. (and no just shutting off off the light does not count, kill the power at the breaker for that circut.
If that does not work.
Kill the power, change the switch, only undo one wire at a time. Make sure it's a three way switch that you buy.
