Question

Light switch location

I live in New York and I'm currently remodeling my basement. I will be wiring soon and I'm trying to figure out if there are any location requirements for switches. I have looked through the NYS Residential Code (2002) and can't seem to find anything on a maximum distance the switch can be located from the doorway. I have found dimensions for receptacles but not switches.

The existing wall framing I am adding a switch box too allows me to place it approx 8 3/4" from the door opening to the center of switch ....without having modify the framing. It doesn't matter if I have to do some modification but would rather keep my amount of work to a minimum.

Surprisingly there is no maximum.

As a contractor, what is your rule of thumb ...what your distance range is?

Is 8 3/4" more than you would do yourself?

Thanks

Of course as close as practical. I don't think 12"-15" is unreasonable though.
Sometimes you do what you have to.
