Light keeps tripping the breaker

Hi,

I recently bought and installed an Ikea Gasgrund light (http://www.ikea.com/sg/en/catalog/products/20173943/), but whenever I plug the wires into it, my circuit breaker trips. However, if I plug the wires into a painters light instead (over the mounting of the IKEA light), it works fine. Does this mean the problem is most likely in the circuitry of the IKEA light fixture?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you,

-Michael

From your description, something is wrong with the fixture. Check the bulb sockets for broken or bent parts, and wires for damaged insulation.

Are you sure you are putting the power wires into the right socket slots?
Looks like power wire goes into L, ground into middle, and neutral into N. You can't always rely on the wire colors in your feeder cable. Do you have a test light or volt meter to check?

Thanks for the replies. I checked the wires, but they were correct (never hurts to double check though). I inspected the fixture, but didn't see anything obviously wrong. I ended up just swapping it out for a different fixture and everything is working now.

So almost certainly it was the fixture, unless while you changed out the fixture you also changed something else. Think carefully!
