Light Fixture Wiring

Do all wiring for light fixture need to be in the electrical box?

When installing my new light fixture on a 3 way switch light all the wires could not possible fit in the box so some were in the light fixture on the yellow insulation pressed against the painted ceiling.

It was not in the junction box but within the electrical light.
