Light Bulb Trickery

Just use the lamps on a dimer only !
Do not use a straight switch.
This is what kills them.
A dimer and a slow start will extend life consierably.

You can use a timer switch to make sue its not left on too long.

Here's another chain of causality, perhaps even more likely than yours.
The dimmer is defective from the factory and sets some nearby curtains on fire which spread the fire and eventually levels the whole neighborhood because one of the OP's neighbors was illegally storing high explosives in his basement, etc., etc., etc.

You seem to be working from this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/For_Wan..._Nail_(proverb)

Whats also involved here is
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proximate_cause
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Counterfactual_thinking
which is maybe why it took me this long to realize there are defects in your logic.

There is more to your post than meets the eye.

Thanks, Mr. B., for getting me to finally analyze wordplay that I've heard many times before but never got around to figuring it out. You did the right thing for the wrong reason but you still deserve some credit.

Oh, by the way it would be against code to conjure up your own resistor or diode system and install that inside an outlet box in the wall. Nor could you put it in a box in or on the ceiling next to the bulb. It would not be Underwriters Laboratories or other safety agency approved.

You might be okay if this resistor system were part of a portable light fixture that is plugged in. And it would not be safe to leave it running (with the lamp filaments warm) overnight. A critical issue is the amount of heat given off by the resistors.

hint mutum is latin as you seem to enjoy using it. Try this subiugale mutum in hominis. I'm surprised when presented to you, you don't recognize it. Maybe your writing is better than your reading.

Yes but in the end all you have offered is a silly calculation of resistor values that won't in anyway be a UL approved solution and potentially can be a fire hazard. I on the other hand offered a UL approved and practical solution (rotary dimmer switch) that is used in tens of millions of switch locations around the world. Your response, was to reply back suggesting a dimmer switch is a fire hazard. That is simply mutum for someone who fancies himself as a quasi intellectual. Quasi indeed.... Maybe quasi is greek for mutum.

I don't mean to pick on anyone specifically. Is this an assumption or does anyone have data to back it up?

Mutum is dumb as in cannot speak rather than dumb as in stupid which seems to be implied in the tone of the post...

Glad to hear it.

Lissen, the powers that B (get it?) have tasked me with writing a catchy headline for this thread.

Howzis?

RESISTOR DESTROYS ALL LIFE ON EARTH - In other news, UL declares bankruptcy.
