We have a ceiling fan that is about 5 years old. Recently the light there started malfunctioning: it would be fine one day but the next the light would not turn on. I would have to remove the globe, unscrew the bulb and the screw it back in. Then the cycle would eventually repeat itself in a few days. Sometimes when it's not working and the globe is off, taping on the bulb would make the light to flash on and off but to keep it steady I have to re-insert the bulb.
Why is this happening? Is there a simple/cheap fix for this?
Not to make this too simple, but nowhere does it say you installed a new bulb. I've had bulbs with a broken filament that behaved just like you described. A broken filament can touch itself and "spot weld" itself and work until is cools.
Another thing. Inside the socket the contacts may be put in with rivets. I've seen these rivets loosen up so they make intermittent connections. Don't stick your finger in there....
