Lighbulbs flicker from time to time

I have two ceiling fans with lights on the ground floor. The lights operate on the wall switch and the fans can be turned on and off by pulling a chain on the fixture. They have been in the house maybe 20 years. I used to have compact florescents in them but started having problems with flickering/crackling so I put in incandescent bulbs recently to rule out problems with CF bulbs. They worked fine for a week, but now these have started to flicker sometimes. (irrespective of fan usage) The fans seem to work without problems. Can someone tell me what is going on? I don't really know electricity, but I worry about a short and fire and am hesitant to turn them on any more.

Lighbulbs flicker from time to time

Are they the only lights in the whole house that flicker?
I'd be checking for a loose connection.

I had a problem with a ceiling mounted fixture upstairs in the stairway but that seems to have stopped. It is operated by two wall switches (one upstairs, one downstairs) There are actually two fixtures on this switch and the one fixture mounted on the wall no longer lights but I'm not sure if that is due to the bulb as I cannot reach it to change it out. The wall mounted fixture bulb hadn't worked for years so I thought it had a dead bulb. I was concerned last year when it suddenly came on with the ceiling mounted fixture and flickered but it hasn't come on since.

You have some loose connections some place, most likly a nutral wire.
Not a good thing and yes it can be a fire hazzard.

Like Joe said---loose conection---if the both flicker at the same time----remove the cap that hides the wires --and replace the wire nuts after you make sure the wires are properly stripped and twisted---

If the lights flicker randomly--one on and the other off---it could be that the socket connection is fatigued or compressed--

The contact in the bottom of the socket can often be pried up a bit to give good contact between the bulb and socket---

Kill the power before you try to fix a socket----always kill the power at the breaker-----

CFL's tend to flicker all sow from time to time. I forget the condition but try replacing them with incandescent bulb's for a short time see if it fixes the probblem.
