Is Leah crazy? Could my microwave kill my WiFi

Could my 1250W microwave cause interference with my WiFi?

It seems like when I microwave a nutritious and delicious meal for my husband my WiFi reception on my laptop drops off to nil.

Am I nuts? (strike that. No response to that question necessary).

Is this possible? probable? asinine?

FYI: I conducted a scientific experiment. 1) I put laptop on counter within three feet of the microwave; 2) I establish a streaming internet connection (thank you NPR); 3) I put some spaghetti squash in the microwave and ran it for 15 minutes. Results: Upon hitting 'start' free and informative radio silenced for the duration of the nuking. For giggles I watched my signal meter. It dropped from' low' to 'nil'.

Clearly, these are the ramblings of a deranged mind. Either that, or I have finally developed DIP (DIY induced psychosis).

(this one is me) (this is the voice in my head)

Quite possible.... Microwave is a form of radio frequency...

Even if there are no leaks in the door seal it could have an effect... Thats why there are warnings around public microvaves about people with heart pacemakers etc..

Bounce enough of it off of something and you can listen thru it just like a holding a cup to a wall...

Your not crazy... Just wear the tin foil helmet and keep chanting!

Leah, you are not crazy. Here is a Wikipedia article on the device that generates the microwaves. Pay attention to the end of the first paragraph where it talks about magnetic fields and such. Hope this helps!

Wifi runs on 2.4GHz and your microwave can definately cause problems. It's the same frequency as a lot of wireless phones. If you have a 2.4GHz phone, start talking on it, start talking on it and start your microwave. You'll notice a lot of static. You can deal with static but a computer can't.

Here's a test for you if you don't want NPR I'll assume you are running windows. Go to the command prompt (start/run and type cmd). Type "ipconfig" without the quotes. At the end you'll see a gateway IP - probably 192.168.x.x or 172.24.x.x. Now type "ping 192.168.x.x -t" again without the quotes and with the gateway ip after ping. You'll see a continuous ping with it replying back. Start the microwave and you'll see it timing out. You can press CTRL + C when you are done with your popcorn to exit the command prompt.

220/221 the thread would have gotten really interesting if I said Wife - at least my husband thinks so. He always wanted to be a mormon, or to be married to a lesbian.

FYI: "1. Operation of microwave oven may cause interference to your radio, TV or similar equiptment. 2. When there is interference, it may be reduced or eliminated by taking the following measures: (a) place radio, TV, etc. away from the microwave oven as far as possible. (b) Use a properly installed antenna to obtain stronger signal reception. (c) Clean door and sealing surfaces of the oven." - pg 5 Panasonic Operating Instructions

So, (a) and (b) seem to make sense. I have to admit (c) scares me a little.

I HAVE TO CLEAN THE DAMN THING?!?
