landscaping lighting

Hi, Just a quick question. I have installed a 600 wt transformer for the back yard. It came with 2 sets of trippers. Problem is I threw away directions. Why 2 sets? Is it because there is two areas for wires? It appears the second set never comes on. Also on another transformer I have four spot lites which are not high volts but the timer runs for about an hour and turns it self off and comes back on when it pleases. I have tried every sized transformer. Home Depot man thinks I am crazy and doesn't know why this happens. Anybody have any advice for this confused lady? Appreciate it lots.

The second set is if you wanted 2 different period for the lights to operate. You should have 2 sets, 2 ON and 2 OFF.

Is the second set of lights wired to the same terminals as the set that does work?

About the transformer with a mind of its own, is it installed correctly? Is there room for air to circulate around it? perhaps the thermal is overheating and cutting the power until the transformer cools down.
