Knob and tube wiring

I have an older home that has had the fuse panel replaced and mostly has newer wiring with breakers. There are still three circuits of knob and tube wiring that go to the outlets in the load bearing walls for outlets, and out to the rear of the house where newer garage electric connects for my detached garage. My questions are how hard is it to remove this stuff, and must shut off the mains while doing it?

Depends. Is it concealed in walls, ceilings, etc? If so, it could be difficult. There's nothing wrong with abandoning the conductors as long as they are disconnected at both ends.

Not necessarily the mains, but the breaker feeding the circuit definately.

There's also nothing wrong with leaving it as is, as long as it's working properly. It's not against code to leave it in service, it's just against code to install new K&T into service.
