It also depends on the cabinet doors and if the cabinets are mounted flush to the ceiling.
I always use 2' because that is the depth of the countertop.

Straying away from the halogens though. Same concept for LED's?

So If you have a soffit that the upper cabinets attach to , versus cabinets that are 1' down from the ceiling , you would lay out the lights different for each?

By far, the trims and how far you recess the lamp in the fixture will have more effect on illumination than the diameter of the cans.

I recently installed (6) 4" cans in the center of my kitchen ceiling. I used silver specular trims in them. When I turn on all (10) 6" cans (the ones with black baffles and lamps recessed all the way and 65W lamps) they cannot even come close to the illumination put out by the (6) 4" cans that have 50W lamps. My cabinets doors are a creme color and reflect some of the light from the soffit cans but even that doesn't matter all that much.

The OP said

... I think I will stick with the 6" - also they are already nailed into place!
so the size is no longer an issue, only the spacing and placement.

Can lighting to me is more of an aesthetic thing than an illumination thing. They can add mood, highlight certain things and with all the trim options cast light in a number of different ways. That's why I like them and that's how I use them.

I have 53 cans in my house and only the ones closely spaced and centered on counters offer light usable for reading and things like that. Everywhere else, I have added other lighting to enhance the illumination.

On the homes I have done the design, I do the same thing and I let the homeowner know why. I've never had a disappointed customer.

Sorry, I guess what I was doing is what I've seen people on here refer to as "thread jacking." I was asking for my own knowledge. I am in the design phase of my mothers kitchen and she will be putting LED recessed fixtures in. So I'm just gathering information from various sources and making a decision based upon such found results.

With LED verison is this will be a screw in type or a hardwired type ?

There are couple differnet type of LED luminaire et bulbs that can be used however before you start to go with LED route there is other item you need to check if you plan to use the dimmer down the road make sure they are dimable type some case they will mention specfic dimmer to use.

I have installed couple LED recessed cans they are not too bad the brand name is CREE I know they cost more than other brand but one nice big plus with CREE is they did come with frosted lens so you will not get such a glare as some of the convental LED even indenscent bulbs are.

As I will mention above the type I used is European specs so the Americian specs will be little diffent but wattage IIRC they are the same. ( due I do live in France )

Merci,
Marc
