Just Curious

Can I step up the amps output from a generator. I believe I can step up the voltage via a step up transformer but how about the amps?

V=IR. The current you get depends on the voltage and the load. The transformer does not magically add power, so will not be able to get out more power than you put in.

Thanks for your reply. I have a generator that supplies 3500 watts at 115 volts and want to increase its output if possible. Can I not step up the power in some way as you can the voltage?

Power is power. If you feed a transformer with a certain power and the transformer is 100% efficient you will get the same power out.
Power = Voltage x Current. If the transformer is a 1:2 step-up, the output voltage will double and the current will be 1/2.

The simple is NO YOU CAN NOT. If you need more watts you need a large generator.

Short and sweet answer is no due the generator wattage size that is your limit there.

That is the stumbling block there if you need more wattage you will have no choice but get larger generator unit.

Merci.

Thanks. I could not see any way except a bigger generator to get what I wanted. I just wanted to be certain.
