Junction boxes

Doing some renovations, I found that in my basement, there are several junction boxes in my ceiling behind the drywall. None of them are accessible without cutting into the drywall. Is this legal and/or safe? What should I do about it? Some seem like they have a wire from the breaker panel that branches to nearby outlets, others just have splices, and one has a wire terminated in it.

Junction boxes

Not kosher. Those boxes should always be accessible. You may have to rewire those circuits, or provide suitable access panels, or relocate the boxes flush with the ceiling and provide blank covers.

Junction boxes

Hidden boxes are a big no-no, for obvious reasons. But there are actually some decent looking blank covers that will blend into the ceiling quite well.

If you have the skill set, it would behoove not only you, but the next owner, to get them accessible one way or the other. If it is beyond your capability, have a qualified electrician make the moves.
