J-box extension for connect point
I assume this is not a problem but figured I'd ask.
Have a new cabinet / wall oven where the position of the existing J-box and length of pig tail from the oven causes the oven to be backed into the cabinet therefore not allowing access to the box to make the connections.
Obviously I can get a longer pig tail / conduit for the oven but that seems more expensive than my other idea.
Alternate thought was to get a second J-box and and just about 24" of wire to locate the second box so the pig tail is a straight run as opposed to the current angle - a straight line will give enough room to access the box for connecting.
NOTES: Wiring is copper in a 1978 home.
240 volt on a 40amp circuit.
Three wire (red & black for hot, white common)
Oven is four wire (No problem on my end; I understand common/ground)
No markings on the existing sheathing but appears to be 10 gauge.
Blue big box store appears that all there 10-2 wiring is color coded red, black, & green.
I assume it is no problem with the second / extended box - yes / no?
What about if I use the extended wire that transitions to green from the existing white?
If the existing cable is 10ga it is not suitable for a 40 amp circuit. You need 8ga for 40 amp. That being said, what is the amperage requirement for your new oven? Also what is the voltage requirement? is it straight 240 volt or is it 120/240 volts? Also you say your existing cable is red, black, white - is there also a bare ground?
The voltage and amperage requirements will be listed on a plate attached to the oven and in the installation instructions.
If the new oven is 40 amps or more you need a new cable.
If the new oven is 30 amps(or less) and the voltage requirement is 120/240 volts and you have a bare wire ground, you can extend and use your existing cable. Without a bare ground you need a new cable.
If the new oven is 30 amps and the voltage requirement is 240 volts you can extend and use your existing wiring with or without a bare ground.
