Intalling a new florescent light

I installed a new florescent light in my garage and I just want to make sure that everything I did is good. I installed it in a place were there was no existing light fixture or box. I wasnít sure if I had to use a ceiling box, and I didnít really see the point. So what I did was drill a 5/8 inch hole in the ceiling, lined it up with a knock out in the florescent fixture, ran the romex through, and I used a cable connector clamp through the knock out and the clamp is inside the light fixture holding the romex.
