Installing a new light fixture

I have attempted to install a new light fixture in the hallway of my house (controlled by a switch) and have run into a problem. When the light fixture wiring is correctly hooked-up it shorts out and the breaker goes.

In the electrical box on the ceiling there is:
3 white wires
3 black wires &
1 red wire

When I connect the white to white, the black to black and connect the red wire to the WHITE wires the breaker will turn off when I flick the switch.

When I connect the white to white, the black to black and connect the red wire to the BLACK wires the light will stay on and the switch does not work at all.

Can someone PLEASE help me. This little problem is driving me MAD!

Installing a new light fixture

The red wire should never be connected to the white wires.

If you have a multimeter you could use it to figure out which is the switch leg, however I suspect it is probably the red wire.

I would try connecting all the white wires together. All the black wires together(except the one on the fixture). Then connect the black wire from the fixture to the red wire.
