Installing a five wire intercom station on a four wire system

I live in an apartment and my building uses a four wire intercom system. My friend gave my a spare intercom station to use but it is 5 wires. I installed wires 1, 2, 3, and X leaving the fourth wire hanging. Everything seems to work except that I cannot buzz people in. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

This is nowhere near enough information to solve that problem. Can you provide the manufacturer and model number of your intercom station, and also of another intercom station that is known to work on this system?
