Installing ceiling fan from scratch
 
Ok the ceiling had no light at all so I m installing the wires myself and drilling the ceiling all the fun stuff.
I was fooling around with the switch at the entrance of the room and notice that when its off I have 109 V & 120 V when it on:confused1::confused1:
Im using a Digital Volt meter straight into the plug (not behind by the wires). Ive read that it should be 0Volts .
before installing the ceiling fan I would like to solve that problem.
My duplex outlet has 6 holes (back) and 6 wires 2 white,1 ground and 3 black????
Any suggestion?

Is the wiring run in pipe or cable?

Can you post a picture of the wiring?

Cables,
Actually its 97 volt not 110 V not sure it makes a difference.

Not pictures yet ,but at the back of the outlet

There are 6 holes 3 on each side (in a row)
on the left side there are 3 black (dark) cables filling up the 3 holes
on the right side 2 white cables with the middle one empty
the ground is also present

If you are looking to run power off that outlet for your fan I don't think it's possible.
The box will be over loaded I think.

Well, nothing else is plugged into the outlet I used to have a Halogen lamp plugged into the upper outlet and whenever I turned off the switch the light would go off so I never expected having 97 V when the switch was off.

I guess, if it were me, I'd replace the switch and take the reading then. Eliminate the easy stuff first.

Then I would get rid of the backstabs, pigtail the wires and put the around the screws on the side of the outlet and make sure the tab on the hot side of the outlet was completely broken off.

This switch doesn't happen to be a dimmer does it?

No dimmer only a switch I hear you but look at what I got.
Ok, here is my outlet really old (insert only).
Notice that there are 2 row of 4 (not 3) holes on each side of the back outlet.
On the hot side (black wires) 2 wires are on the LOWER part of the outlet on one side and 1 white wire on the other side this is where I always have 120 volt.

On the UPPER part of the outlet there is 1 black wire on 1 side and 1 white wire on the other side this is where I have 120 ish volt when switch is on and 97 Volt when switch is off

Why do I have 3 wire on the lower part and only 2 on the upper part of outlet. Also on the white side I clearly see the tab not broken, but on the hot side (black wire) I see it broken but am not sure IF it should be taken off not just broken.
This is a bad picture of OLD outlet.

Is the switch that controls this outlet a dimmer?

Do this either way (and I suggest doing this for other outlets as well)

Remove the backstabbed connections

1) Buy an outlet with screw teminals
2) Turn off power to the circuit
3) Remove wires from the back of the current receptacle
4) Pigtail the blacks
5) Pigtail the whites

How to pigtail

6) Put the pigtails, and the red around the screw terminals (If you are looking at the face of the recept, the black goes to the bottom right screw, the red goes to the top right screw , the white on the left (doesn't matter top or bottom screw))
7) Turn on power
8) Meter the black to white, and red to white (red should be controlled by the switch so meter the red with the switch on or off)

You should have 120V between the black and white with the switch off, or on. You should have 120V between the red and white with the switch on, and 0V with the switch off.

(Note: If the red is controlled by a dimmer, you might get "odd" readings on the red and white with the dimmer on)

its grounded look at the pictures, I know its bad quality, you eventually see the ground cable.
I think that whoever install the outlet didnt take the brass tab on the hot side out but just broke it. I will try to take it out tonight.
It doesn t explain why I have so many wires on the hot side?????

Definetly would switch the receptacle to one that you can screw the wires to the back. And looks like a switched receptacle you could run the switch wires up to the fan instead of the receptacle.

From the description, it's a switched outlet. (1 plug on always 1 plug switched). Check voltage in the unswitched plug as well. Sounds like a neutral problem somewhere.

He will never figure out the problem metering the receptacle the way it is wired. Minimum he will need to resplice and meter the wires.

You're probably right especially since the tab isn't broken off in the neutral side.
