Installing a ceiling fan with a light switch.

I have 4 wires coming out of my conduit - red, black, white and ground - and the instructions just call for the black, white and ground wire. If I just ignore the red wire it doesn't work.

Help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Robert

One more thing....
There is a light switch for it but only one.
It turns off both the fan and the light if they are turned on.

Thanks again,
Rob

Rob
If you purchase a remote control and receiver from one of your big box home centers it will make the use if your fan and light more useful and user friendly.

Thanks Ron but this is for my back patio and the pull chains will work just fine.

Theoretically you would hook the fan's black to the black, the fan's blue to the red, the fan's white to the white, and ground to ground.

Right now, you have it hooked up black and blue to black, white to white, and it works but only one switch controls it . . . yes?

Write back or check here for more information on ceiling fan wiring:

I tried three times before I got it right. It's blue wire to red wire, and black wires together, and grounding (green or bare) wires together. More about that here meedandpea.blogspot.com

I really hope the Op has solved this issue from 6 years ago.
