Installing a ceiling fan

1 Attachment(s)
Okay so I was planning on installing a new ceiling fan in the master bedroom, which I started by taking off the old one, then I found a flat circle mounted on the ceiling with two bolts. I cant tell if its a pancake box or what? Because when I try to install the mounting bracket for the new fan the screws are too thick for the bracket. Now what to do ?

Thanks for the feedback

PS
I tried attaching a picture

I think what you see there was supposed to be attached to a proper junction box and instead got screwed directly to a stud. I would take that thing off and install a proper, fan supporting junction box.

You need an electrical box regardless, whether it's fan rated or not depends on if you can mount the fan to the structure or not. You have a few choices depending on the actual joist location.

In your picture, looks like your best option would be to purchase a pancake fan rated box and secure the fan box to the joist itself, then the fan to the fan rated box. That is if there is actually a joist holding up the original fan. :)
