Installing an additional outlet in a laundry room

I have an old unitized washer/dryer in a laundry room closet that i'm replacing with new front loading, stackable machines. when the installers came, they said they couldn't install them because the old machine (one unit) used just one plug, the existing 240v dryer outlet. to install the stacking units, they would need an additional 120v laundry room outlet for the washer. an electrician i consulted with said he would need to cut through dry wall and run a new wire/outlet from my electrical panel across the house. can't he just split off from the existing 240v outlet in the laundry room to wire an additional 120v outlet?

No, the existing receptacle is most likely on a 30 amp breaker and you cannot tap that for a 15 or 20 amp one. You might also have only a 3 wire cable with no neutral.
