Installing 120VAC Outlet
This may be a simple one to answer. I have an outlet box in a bedroom with a cover. After removing the cover I noticed there is a red and a white wire in there just taped off...connected to nothing. I was curious if one was hot and the other neutral, could I connect a standard wall outlet in here and use it for a lamp/tv/etc.????

I haven't tried it yet, however I have a multimeter which I can check to see if there is power here. I can try that later today.

So the red and white are not tied together just in there taped off? Is there any switched plugs in your room? When you go to check for voltage see if the voltage is dependant on a switch.

If I am not mistaken, everything in Chicagoland is in pipe, no romex. So perhaps the color shouldn't get the consideration it would if it were wired in romex. The only way to check is with the meter.

I believe you are correct, romex is not approved per Chicago code. The hard conduit coming into the outlet box has only the red and white wire coming in. The end of the wires have electrical tape on them and that is it.

When I did the ceiling fan in this room, I noticed there was also a yellow wire in the ceiling junction box. I determined this led to another wall outlet that was wired to one of the two wall switches. Luckily I was able to break this wire in the ceiling box and use it for the ceiling fan. Now I have the fan motor and lights each wired to the two switches on the wall. No need for a switched outlet in this room.

I am goign to meter the wires and see if I have good power there. I will post my findings later. Thanks

Could be anything. You need to find the other end of the iwres. You need to measure the voltage on the wires.
