Installed a dimmer and now upstairs lights don't work

Hey guys,

Wondering if someone can help. I installed a dimmer in the basement of my new house and now the light switches in two of the rooms on the second floor won't come on... This is really weird. The plugs work, everything works but the ceiling lights in only TWO of the rooms on the second floor. I checked the breaker and reset the only switch on the panel that has a reset feature. (I figure it's there due to the fact that that room is the office with all the PC stuff.)

The house is only a year old and made with the most modern building standards available today (or so they say lol).

NOW, I don't know if this has anything to do with it but before I installed the dimmer, EARLIER in the day I installed a timer in both guest bath and ensuite for the second floor fans so at that time I was also playing with the breaker switches to turn off the power but I don't see how this is happening. I don't know if I missed something on the breaker but from what I can tell, all the switches are back to their original positions (on).

Can someone please help??? I have no clue what happened and I'm really lost!!!

Thanks for reading

P.S. The 2 rooms are next to each other so maybe they are on the same circuit.

How many wires(or romex cables) came into the box in that you installed the dimmer on? Is there anyway that you could have switched a couple wires up when installing the dimmer?

Also, if you didn't know, if a breaker trips you need to first turn it off, then turn the breaker back on for it to work. I would check the wiring in the boxes that you worked in first, then if everything is fine there, i would take off the breaker panel cover and check with a voltage tester and check all of the outgoing power of the 20amp and 15amp Single Pole breakers.

Pablo, I assume that in the basement light switch Box, you did not disconnect any white wires.

Since the Basement Dimmer works the C/B is functioning OK

This is the way I see it:
Check Basement Dimmer Black Wire Wirenut connection. It should connect 3 black wires:
  • One to the Dimmer (it works)
  • One from the C/B (it works)
  • One that is routed upstairs (looks like an open)
Let us know what happens
& Stay Safe
