Installed Ceiling Fan Light Kit - No Lights
 
Hi folks. My knowledge on this is highly limited but I ended up replacing a ceiling light fixture in my closet and felt confident enough to do something even simplier than that which was adding a ceiling light kit to my ceiling fan.

I picked up one of these from Home Depot today. The instructions were simple enough.

The kit had black and white wires. Black connects to the blue available inside my ceiling fan wire housing and the white connects to the white available inside my ceiling fan wire housing.

Here's a picture of how I installed it.

So once I got them in and wired up, turned the circuit back on, turned on the switch that turns on the fan (which powers the whole fixture I;m assuming). Since there was no light, I figured I need to turn the pull-chain on the light kit to get the lights working. Even then, no lights.

Thought it was the bulbs but the bulbs work fine.

Not sure what I could have done. Anything I might have been done wrong? Only thing possible that I could have done is that the black/white wires that came with the kit had white plastic terminals. I had no way to wire these with the non terminated wires on the ceiling fan so I cut them off, stripped off the casings so I can use a wirenut (seen in the pic) to wire them together.

I have a simple voltage detector I use (for safety) and it does seem to pick up voltage from the black & blue wires that are now wired together. It does not pick up any voltage from the white wires (normal?) no matter if the fixture is powered or not. Only way I know I may have done 'something' right is that my voltage detector doesn't detect anything if I power off the light kit using the pull chain; but it does (only on black/blue) once I power the kit again.

Is it a defective unit I bought or did I do something horribly stupid?

You need to remove the bonnet at the ceiling junction box and make sure the black and BLUE wire from the fan are connected to the black wire in the box.

Thats correct. Some people do not connect the blue when they install the fan. The bonnet is the skirt that covers up the wires in the ceiling box. In there you should find a blue wire that is not connected to anything. This is for the light.

Okay, just gave it a look.

The blue wires from the fan indeed are not connected to a BLACK wire, instead connected to a RED wire coming from the ceiling power supply.

There are black wires connected together but its from black wires from the fan to the black wire from the ceiling power supply.

Do I disconnect the blacks, put the blue and black together from the fan wires and wirenut those two to the black from the ceiling supply?

Edit:

So I did some reading up on what the red wires are and apparently they are for light kits like these so they can work separately from the switch that turns on the fan. Not sure why the red is there because there isn't any other light switch around that would turn that on. I've tried turning on all the switches I can find near the fan area and nothing would turn on the lights from the light kit (even after trying the pull-chain).

Open the switch box that contains the switch for the fan. That is where you will find the unused red wire. If you want to have separate switches for the fan and light get a combination switch and replace the existing switch, wire the black to one switch and the red to the other. A combination switch is a device that sits in a single switch box and has 2 single pole switches on a single yoke.

If you want to have a single switch and use the pull chains, connect the blue and black wires together in the fab bonnet.

Thanks, that makes sense. At work so I haven't had chance to look inside the switch box but you're likely correct that the red wire in the switch box isn't connected.

The fan switch is already on a combination switch but the other two switches are occupied with other lights. I don't mind using one switch for both fan and light. Is it feasible to just wire the red and the black on the single switch instead of doing that back up at the fan bonnet?

Yes, at the switch pigtail the black and red together and connect to the terminal the black is connected presently.

Got everything worked out. Thanks for the help!

Ended up just wiring the blue to the black at the bonnet so I can just use the switch to turn the light on and off. Realized if I wire the red in the switch box, only way to turn off the light would be at the pull chain.

One last quick question... Since I have the light's wire hooked up to the same wire that powers the fan (black wire at the bonnet), does it still draw the same amount of energy as if the fan would use if the fan were to be on as well? It's pretty much winter time so the fan is going to remain off but since the switch powers both fan and light now, I'm wondering if I'd waste energy.

Or is it that since the fan is not running anyway, only energy consumption would be at the light?

The fan only uses power when running regardless how it is wired. Same for the light.

You could have jumpered a hot at the switch box and installed another switch on the red wire for separate control of the light kit. There are also dual switches on a single strap that will fit in a 1 gang box.

Thanks. This is good to know. If I ever decide to do that (which I may later since you mentioned it), I know it can be done!
