installation of elec junction box in old house

have an old house and it appears they installed sheet rock over a plaster ceiling. In doing so the wires in the middle of the ceiling come out from a hole and I can't see a junction box. I want to install a chandelier. Is it possible to do without making a huge mess?

Yes. Use a roto-zip to cut through the lathe, dremal with a rotary cutter to make the hole.
