install new receptical?

hello, i have a house with two decorative ledges that i would like to add an outlet for rope lights. there are a couple outlets on the wall under the ledge that i should be able to get power from. is it ok to run romex behind the wall(parallel) up to the decorative ledge for the new outlet. what is the best way to go about this project?

Sure it is ok. get a couple old work boxes and associated hardware.

cut the outlet box out above where you want the new one and drop a string in the wall weighted down with a small nut. Knock out a hole in the existing box in the top and use a scrap wire to reach in and grab the string. Use the string as a pull line to pull the wires in.

Lets hope that there are no perlines in the wall or you will not be abe to fish past them easily. Sometimes we just end up having to do some damage to the walls.

It would be a good idea to run a stud finder over the wall from the top outlet to the bottom just to ensure that noone put a cross brace from stud to stud anywhere first.
