If power adapter has a polarity symbol, is it AC-DC?

I need a 9V ~780mA AC to AC adapter with a 1/8" TS plug. My friend passed me one, but it has a polarity symbol on it, does that mean it is AC to DC? From what I understand polarity is not an issue with an AC to AC adapter. Thanks very much!

Post a picture. If it looks like a lazy S on its side, it is AC. If it looks like Morse code (Line with two or three dots above), it is DC for the output.

I suspect DC based on your info. I had tried it on the device in question when he gave it, and it didn't work. I assume no damage would have been done, as it was looking for AC not DC? Thanks!

The one you posted in the photo that is DC secondary supply.

My simple thumb of rules always replace with the same size or larger as the oringal one is.

And pay attetion to the connection on the plug espcally if the device required DC supply.

The tilde ( ~ ) after the Input: 100-120 means AC (a single cycle of a sine wave looks like the tilde symbol).

The Output is 9.0V DC at up to 1.0 Amperes. The straight line with 3 dots below indicates DC. Below that, the diagram indicates that the positive side of the DC goes to the center pin of the output connector, and the negative side goes to the outer (sleeve) part of the output connector.

That is certainly a lot of information on a small space! All you need is the ability to determine what the symbols mean.

It will help me out to sort the mess of adapters I have collected over the years of traveling and having to buy adapters in a foreign country.
