ICAT can leaks heated air into attic

All of the ICAT cans I viewed at several stores have a manufacturing gap between the can and the attic mounting flange causing a huge air leak from the room below! Would it be safe to seal the leak by applying aluminun duct tape, plumbers putty or acrylic caulk? I have a couple dozen cans to replace (old Non IC cans) in order to improve energy efficiency. Thanks

The appropriate trim ring will help cover the gap. Also, if you are using IC-rated cans, you can put insulation around them to further minimize any airflow. I would not modify the can or attach anything directly to it (remember, the can interior will heat up considerably when the light is on because it is airtight).

Thank you, I am still looking at a considerable air exchange. Maybe I'll look into fireproof furnace sealer. I have seen it being used on the furnace exhaust joints. It would be nice if the Fixture manufactuter would quit passing their stuff off as "AIR TIGHT"... The folks at the BOX stores are clueless...
