I think I got crappy service - what should I ask to get fixed?


I had my service upgraded yesterday. I think I might have made a bad choice in contractor, but I am also a perfectionist, so I was hoping to get some input to help me know if I'm too picky.

Here's my concerns:

1) I had a new 100A cable run from the meter to my basement. I asked for a 20/30 panel in the basement. He said by email he was planning to give me a 20/30 panel, but he didn't put the specifics on the estimate. Then he put in this junky Siemens 16/24. I feel like he should come back and put in the panel I thought I was getting.

2) The 100A cable has its sheathing damaged in quite a number of places. He wrapped some parts in electrical tape, some places he didn't even notice he'd ripped the sheathing. In a couple places there are splits 2 inches long and you can see the wires inside. I don't think any internal wires had their sheathing ripped off (though some are marred) but there are a few places where the bare ground wire can be seen. I want to ask him to re-pull it and not damage it this time.

3) He cut the vinyl siding off my house to put in a 200A meter box, and it looks pretty bad. For other places where the siding is cut off the house, it is trimmed with a white trim piece to look nice. He just hacked the siding and put the box up, no trim. I was going to fix the trim myself, but it is nearly impossible to get in there now that the box is in place since it has a large lip that is supposed to go behind the siding. Should he have done that right?

So where am I being picky, and where do I really need to ask for him to fix it?

Daniel, this more of a legal matter/contract dispute.

Nothing we can say will really help you resolve this issue.

A lawyer or the BBB is a better source of information than any open forum.

PS: it is a crappy install.

I was wondering what, according to you pros, was worth asking for.

Should I be asking him to re-pull the cable? I know the panel thing is a contract dispute certainly - but what about the cable? Should I leave well enough alone there?

What did the inspector say? He did not notice the damaged cable?

Gimme a sec I will find the code section on this.

The inspector showed up when he said he would, and our electrician wasn't completely ready, so the inspector was actually watching while he finished stuff. It was nice of the inspector, probably because I was right there looking worried and wanted my power back on.

The inspector knew this was on a basement remodel permit, so he said he'd look at the stuff in the basement more closely during my 4-way. He didn't even go down stairs to ensure the grounding was hooked up right to the water main or anything. I didn't notice the sheathing until I was looking at it this morning.

I don't want to fail on the 4-way - I'd like to ensure I'm good now. That would stink because I am putting up soffiting soon that will make pulling a new cable quite a bit harder.

There is something about repairing the sheath to an equal insulation as the original, I cannot find it right now.

What four way are you concerned about?

The next inspection the city requires is a 4-way: rough plumbing, HVAC, electrical, framing. The inspector said he'd look closer at the electrical work in the basement during that. But I'll be ready for drywall at that point and have many more things in the way of the cable than I do now.

Is there something beefier than electrical tape to repair the cable?

Rubber tape with vinyl(regular) over it. Bit overkill.

Siemens is NOT junk. Not even close.
That said, if he said he was installing a 20/30 he should have let you know in advance that he was installing a 16/24.

This is hack work. Even though taping is a legal fix for damaged sheathing, anything more than a small tear or two should have mandated a new cable.

Again, hack work.

This guy sounds like a real winner. Was he even a real electrician?
Being a perfectionist you didn't get a bad feeling from this guy from the get-go?

I would get the inspector back out and point out your concerns - Tell the inspector you want him to do a thorough inspection. There is not any reason to have patches on a new install.

It is hard to know how a person is going to really do the work. He seemed a knowledgeable electrician, I even asked him some other questions that matched what people said on this forum. He said he'd put in the panel I wanted and was fast and responsive. But on the day of, he sort of just choked. I was just wrong in the feeling I got about him, I guess.

Perhaps Siemens isn't junk. But the panel rattles a lot, and the door is clunky and hard to open with plastic hinges compared to the all metal, tight T&B panel I already had. This is going to be a theater area so I really don't want a panel that might rattle a lot.

But are you sure that there is a code on it? Im in a similar situation. The company hires a new lead guy, and I think he is a complete idiot. He has us pulling # 4 wires through a one inch pipe to a trough, but there is no bushings on the pipe. So when the wires reach the pipe, the insulation was badly torn. We all tried to tell him that we needed to put them on first but he didn't listen. He just kept saying "Do what I tell you to do". I'm pissed that I was even a part of this whole mess

I would agree that the guy is an idiot. Best not to tell him that if he is above you.

I think there is a code about repairing the sheath, I will look again later.

One last thing. I looked at his work in the outside meter box. The copper ground conductors, in a few places, are touching/rubbing the aluminum ground conductors. I heard that copper and aluminum can corrode each other. Should these ground conductors be touching at all?

They are hooked into the bus bar properly at separate locations, the aluminum with the anti-oxidant - but it is as they are running to the bus bar that they are rubbing.
