I was not my fault

One of my tenants had a light stop working. Went over, found the switch was bad. Put a new switch in and called it a day. About 45 minutes later I get a call, house has no power. Nothing. My first thought was that the breaker I switched off must have melted the whole panel. I figure I will go there, check the main for power and call it a day. I pull into the driveway and hear the neighbor has a generator running(good sign). I go through the panel, all the sudden power back on. I was thankful that the power had not gone out while I was working. Neighbor told me power is out all over town. Anyone ever have the power grid go out while they were doing electrical work?

Not me.

It honestly did happen to me and I tell the joke often.... I'm a GC and not a sparkie.... and I was putting in a subpanel to a 1000 foot additiion to my own home.

My next door neighbor and good friend is an electrical contractor and had advised me on some fine points at least to me as a relative novice... like floating my neutral... slow bend in my feeder.....

It was July or August in late afternoon in the late 80's.
(I knew what I was doing, but still I'm not a sparkie working on mains and subs all the time... so I was somewhat timid and cautious...

I was down probably 2 hours... threw my main and sub on and NOTHING!

Looked it over, double checked my breakers, was scratchin my head when the phone rang.... John next door telling me he was out of electricity and I must have somehow blown the transformer.....

Well, .. Coincidentally, that was the timing when 4 western states (CO,WY,UT, and one other) grid went down from the July AC load.

I got John back years later.....

Best

I had the owner of a liquor store next to the store I was doing new (power not even on yet) accuse us of causing the Northeast blackout of 2003. Well, she accused us of killing the power to her store, that is until we noticed the street light (and everything else) was out as well.

Once had a 1200A 480V feeder breaker blow because one of my union employees didn't know how to tape bugs. Took out the Deptford Mall food court during lunch time. Whole lot of pissed off merchants.

I was at a fundraising party for 600 people---I simply turned off a light switch and the entire building went dark---

It was a 5 minute power outage in the neighborhood---but I thought I killed the party----

As opposed to your usual sparkling personality doing it?

I'm kidding, of course, but that was too hard to resist.

Fuse cutout above my pole transformer blew about 10 minutes after I tested a new generator interlock kit
The POCO came out and said the transformer "went bad" :whistling2:

If it had happened when I had the generator on I would have freaked out completely

But when we had a power outage it ran for a few minutes after power was restored with no problems, so I assume it was just a freak thing....
