How should I wire this

The attached picture is rough. But I have the power coming in to my 2 gang box and a line going to the shower light and fan and another line going to the vanity light. I wired it as the picture shows, piggy tail from the power leg to each switch and then attach the legs to the lights to the switches also. I flipped the breaker on with the switches in the ON position and it worked fine, lights were on and fan was running. But then I turned the switch to the OFF position and it flipped the main breaker at my meter box and the breaker it is attached to. What is going on. How should I wire this?

Looks like you might be online so I'll take a shot at it until the masters come along. Your pic shows 4 wires to each switch?? If that is the case then that is where you are wrong. 1 hot ,(black) , in and one hot out of each switch. Neutrals ,(white), tie together and go to the fixture. That is assuming you have the correct switch there. HS.

That is the way I had it a black and white in and a black and white out with the grounds all tied together. Is that were I messed up. So what I should do is only have the black tied inthrough the switch and have the white tied directly to the other whites and the ground tied directly to the other grounds?

Yes , black in and out, whites tied together. You must have had your switch upside down because the way you had it would have tripped the breaker in the "on" position.Tie the grounds together and pigtail to the ground screw on the switch. HS.
