How to place recessed light cans?

I'm working in a 12x22 room and would like to install recessed lights. I'm fortunate there is no sheetrock, but I'm not sure how to align the lights. There are 6 cans. How can I best align the lighting? Will this even be enough for that size room?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

How to place recessed light cans?

I put my lights up Temp, used old power cords to wire them up
Then installed the bulbs I plan to use & looked at the lighting spread
Moved them around as needed
I ended up with (5) 6" in a ~24'x19 area
Odd number because one is centered over a large window in the front
In addition I will have (4) 4" cans along one side over a bar

How to place recessed light cans?

This will be a kitchen/dining area, with a window in the front section of the room and cabinets in the back section. Your concept sounds good with 1 in front of window and 4 others squared. The idea of smaller diameter over the bar sounds like it would be good in front of my cabinets shining down on the counter top.

I just didn't know if there was any formula to squaring the cans so they will be evenly spaced?

Thanks for your reply.

Kitchen is different
You want spots over the counter tops
Wall cabinets stick out 12"
My 4" cans in the kitchen are about 24" out from the wall to the center
If they are too far out & you are standing at the counter you will shadow the counter
Usually a light is also installed over the sink
