Depending where you are located, states or canada. In the states you can not use only 14/2. Some areas of your house will require 12/2, such as bath's, kitchens, laundry rooms.

Why do you have to buy all of it at one time anyway?

I agree with JBfan. The question is much to vague.

Is this a complete re-wire job? If so you will need quite a bit of #12 for bath and kitchen receptacle wiring.

Some will say use only #12 and larger. I am NOT one of them.
#14 is perfectly fine for many general receptacle circuits as long as not too many devices are placed on a circuit. I usually stay under 10 "items" per 15 amp circuit.

If I were starting from scratch with no stock on hand I'd start with 1000' of 14/2, 250'-500' of 14/3 and 500'-1000' of 12/2.

I wired my house house this past fall...new construction...2238 ft2. SP, numbers are close...I used 1500 ft each of 12-2 and 14-2; 500 ft of 14-3 and I think about 150 ft of 12-3 (3 way switched outlets). I purchased 1000 rolls and will use the rest in the basement and garage wiring.
