How many 6" recessed lights for 8x10' kitchen?

I'm remodeling my kitchen, and about to start putting up the recessed lighting, but am not sure how many to hang. I have 4 6" recessed lights I was planning on using, but am not sure if that is too much.

I was planning on putting one to the left of the oven, and one to the right of the oven(there will be a hood over the oven), about 24 " off the wall. Then thinking about putting two at the same locations about 3 feet behind those(closer to the other wall with cabinets/counter tops). Is this over kill?

I have attached a picture of the proposed layout of my kitchen

How many 6" recessed lights for 8x10' kitchen?

I recently put 4 4" recessed lights in a similar sized kitchen. I am still waiting on cabinets and appliances to get the total feel, but I think what I have will be sufficient. I am running 50watt bulbs with a dimmer and they give off ample light. I think if I had to do it again I would have used 6 4" lights instead of 4. I think you should go with all 4 lights and not less.

Well, knowing the actual dimensions of the room would help quite a bit, but from you quick description I'd say you are close with what you intend to do.

I'd center them as close to 20"-24" from the walls as I could

6" cans, 20 to 24 out from the wall. One over the stop left of the range, one to the right, two over the opposite ctop. I assume you have a vent hood/light. If not, add one over the range.

You want to put the light where you need it, right over the working space.

Use undercabinet lights for task lighting. You wnt need much in the ceiling that way....4 would be plenty.

I put a 4" can in the small cabinet over the sink. This is a work area some seem to neglect. If you're not using IC (insulation contact) cans, make sure you built baffles around your lighting boxes to keep the insulation off.
