How do I remove this?

Hey all. We're trying to install a fan in our kitchen. We took out the light fixture that was there already and for some reason can't figure out how the heck to get this thing out to put the fan joist in. Please help. Thanks in advance.

Its a nail on plastic box. Has a flange on the top that is nailed to the joist above. Wont support a ceiling fan...

Do you have access to the area above it?

No access to the area above. We did get one of those Westinghouse Saf-T-Braces from Home Depot to install the fan. Any ideas on how to go about removing it? We were about to just drill/cut it out but hoping there's an easier/better way to do it.

A inline hack saw, cut the nails off, remove box, add new box and finish the job.

If its the older style plastic box you may be able to cut it with a chisel and hammer. Main thing is not to damage the wires. Should be a joist running on one side of the box that its nailed to from above.
Wont be that hard to get out.
