How do i connect a double lightswitch?

This might have been answered but let me ask again.

I have a 12/2 wire running from a 20 amp breaker connected into a separate junctionbox in my attic. From that junction box I have a 12/3 wire going to a celing fan/light fixture and a 12/3 wire going to the light switch. How do I connect the wires in the junction box so that the fan and light be controlled separate. The 12/2 has a black and white and the 12/3 has black/red/white. I have the fan connected right now with black from source to black at switch, white from switch to switch to light and black from light to white from source. This works but how do i connect the red wire so I can control these separate? I was told I need to run a sepate black/white line for each thing? This doesn't make sense to me. Let me know if im all wrong here and what I should do to get the light and fan to work separate.

You did not need the 12-3 from the JB to the fixture box, 12-2 would have worked. Bring the supply from the JB on the white & black of the 12-3 (cap the red). In the fixture box connect the white of the supply to the white of the fan. Connect the black of the supply to the white going to the switch box (mark the white with black marker indicating it is hot, do the same in the switch box). Connect the fan motor lead(usually black) to the black to the switch box. Connect the light kit lead(usually blue) to the red to the switch box. In the switch box pigtail the white (that you marked black) to one side of each switch. Connect the red to one of the switches, black to the other.

How do i connect a double lightswitch?

I don't have two separate switches, i have a double switch, one unit with two switches. I have this working on my kitchen but I didn't wire that room so I don't know how its wired but to the light switch the white wire is connected to the black nut and the black and red wires and connected to the gold nuts on the opposit side of the switch (thats in my kitchen).

connect black from 12/3 to fan to black from 12/3 from switch
connect red from 12/3 to fan to red from 12/3 from switch
