How to choose light switch styles (for 2 and 3 gangs)

Do you consider the light switch plate cover when deciding the style switch you are going to use? This may seem like dumb question.

I have a 3-gang box with two regular switches. the third is a dimmer so would it be obvious to choose the dimmer with the small slider vs. the dimmer with the large slider? this way i can simply use a standard 3 switch plate cover which i can easily find.

I prefer the dimmers with the larger sliders but finding a plate cover with two small rectangles and one large is not easy... or is it?

Also, what about putting a rotary dimmer next to a regular switch? I suppose I could buy a solid cover and custom make my own openings.

Basically, is there a rule of thumb when purchasing a switch style when you have multiple switches in a box?

I'm surprised. I can find mutli-gang covers at my local Borg with a variety of small and large cutouts. You can also find a ton of places on-line that offer a lot of combinations.

As far as the rotary dimmers are concerned, you typically just use the small rectangular opening. The knob conceals the opening anyway.

Different plates are easy to find, I suggest focusing your attention to the actual switch you want then buying a plate to match.
