If I understand correctly, what it comes down to is that that white wire needs to be re identified to be code legal in most areas, because it is actually being used as a hot.

I had 8 wires in a box, I was able to figure it out, but it was a bit confusing with all of the wires hanging there, and I thought, if this white wire is getting tied into hot for the switch, then why isn't it re identified? It seems the answer is that it should have been.

In residential wiring , roamex would be like a cord where you can't choose the color , so you should mark the white to identify it as hot in that situation . Sadly enough , few pros do .
