Hot tub wiring

I'm about to buy a hot tub, but want to make sure our wiring is correct before I buy anything. The previous owners of the house had a hot tub but took it with them. It was definitely wired for 220(3 wire w/ground 8 or 10 gauge)

The wiring for the hot tub originates at the main panel in our house from a 50amp double pole breaker. There's some heavy gauge wire that goes from the panel to another panel outside next to the spa where there is a 20amp double breaker (not gfci).
A) I believe this need to be changed to a GFCI
B) What amperage should that breaker be next to the tub?
shouldn't that be a 40 or 50amp?

Thanks

Hot tub wiring

The size of the breakers at the sub panel will depend upon the hot tub you have. For example, my Hot Spring brand, has a 50 amp main, then a 20 and 30 amp GFCI in the sub, wired w/ #8 and #10 ground. The manual or pre-delivery instructions for your model should specify the electrical requirements.
