hooking up gas fireplace

im trying to hook up a gas fireplace for my friend. I see the 14-2 bx cable coming out of the fire place. The things that bothers me is that their another cable coming out of the fireplace but with just one black cable inside it. Im not sure what that cable is for?

Millivolt switch for the burner? Where is the installation manual?

i think you're right that's it's a thermostat because theirs a red and black wire conductor. I looked at the the fireplace but couldn't find any kind of brand name of the fire place.

Now, how exactly do i hook up that thermostat and the 14-2 wire to the switch?

If it's anything like the ones I've done the 14-2 should go to a wall switch with a 120 volt feed. This switch likely controls a blower.

The other goes to a separate switch box with a switch only. After the pilot light is lit, this switch controls the burner on and off.

Without more details that is the best I can do.

so to be clear, the 14-2 wire gets connected directly to an outlet(for power source) from around the area, then the thermostat is connected on a seperate switch?

Now, the thermostat has a red and black wire. Which wire is connected to the switch and which wire is connected to the neutral?

It is a millivolt switch. There is not neutral. One black and one red each to one screw on the switch.

I did not say the 14-2 gets tied into a recptacle unless the blower has a switch in the fireplace unit itself.

There should be a nameplate somewhere, either on the outside, or inside the unit where the electric and gas connections are. It might be covered in dust, so get a flashlight and see...

like jbfan says...never do a job without the manual . To many factors involved. The fan may be wired internally to come on with the thermostat which would mean you just tie it into unswitched power or it may need to have a seperate switch installed on it. If you wanted the fireplace to be a source of heat then you'd have to install a thermostat on the smaller wire and it would control when the fireplace comes on and turns off. Most likely from the sound of it though you just want this as more of a showpiece so the easiest thing to do is install two switches. One to turn on the blower and a seperate one to turn on the fireplace. And this takes us back to the manual for the type of switch that's recommended. Whatever you do...do not connect the small wire to 120V. The bx will get tied into 120v power. the small wire is most likely a 24v circuit with just a red and black that will get tied into it's own switch seperate from the house power.

Warnock Hersey appears to be testing lab not a manufacturer.
