I guess to be safe, wired is the way to go if it's easy to install. Do wireless if you want to be able to roam around the house, which I was assuming since it's a laptop your using in the other room... or do both!

Couple of ways to crank up the range...

1) They sell aftermarket signal boosters that replace the stock antennae
2) If it's a older Linksys wrt54g router, you can upload the satori firmware that'll let you increase the signal strength. You can google the firmware as they have Satori, HyperWrt, etc.
