Home made "Magnafish"?

I'm getting ready to pull some CAT 5 cable, and was wondering if anyone here has tried this device:

http://www.amazon.com/MAG6589-inchMa...0981257&sr=8-1

as I just ran into a cable installer who swears by it, and says the magnet is powerful enough to work through lath and plaster walls. If so, I was considering just ordering one of these to make my own:

Anyone has anyone here tried this?

Check out this system too.

It's seems like it would work the best because of it being a roller. I don't know if I would want to drag a flat magnet down my walls.

why mess with that little magnet on the old guy's video. Try this one:

actually, if you want a magnet, this site is pretty good. a 100 pound pull magnet (which the old guy was claiming but I'll bet it wasn't):

Has anybody used that magnet pull gizmo? It seems to work extremely well for the guy in the video.

I run wires all the time, never seen one of those.
I still like the old chains, one of those fiberglass rods work well.

Are you trying to fish the walls jsur to hide the wire?
Dont do much wall fishing anymore, just come up through basement/crawlspace or run outside.
