Hole in sheet rock too big for J-box

Me and my father-in-law ran a new 12-2 line up to my finished attic for a window A/C unit. I had to cut a new box in the wall to accommodate the outlet. I used what i think is termed a "J-Box", it has the wings that help anchor it to the back of the drywall...

So needless to say I made the hole the exact size of the box and the flanges thinking that i had to allow room for the flanges and such to fit through.. so now i have the box affixed to the bottom of the hole such that the flanges are outside the wall and the top are sunk in quite a ways... The whole thing is sound and doesnt move, but it looks aweful!

My father-in-law said hes seen a flange or adapter that I could place behind the boxes' flanges to give it something else to grab onto (reduce the amount of space it has to float)... At any rate i'm having trouble trying to locate such a thing

Pull out the box and slip an 8" 2x4 in there. Use drywall screws to carefully screw it with 4 screws thru the drywall on the side of the box. Screw your box to the 2x4 flush with the drywall.

Patch 4 small holes.

Or you could follow the advice of a carpenter friend of mine:

"A little putty, a little paint, makes a carpenter something he ain't"

Just substitute electrician for carpenter.

Is this AC unit a 110V 20amp or less? Just wanted to be sure since you ran 12ga wire.

Yup... 110 VAC rated @ 11.2 Amps.... 12-2 wire on a 20amp breaker

just as a follow up.. what i ended up doing was buying a 2-gang old work box and rotating it 90 degrees and making the current hole just wide enough and it worked like a charm... I choose to use the leviton custom plates to make a 2-gang with 1 set of outlets and a blank on the other half... worked real well and looks 100% better
