Help With Panel Problem

Hi All. I've got a problem with my panel and I'm not sure how to tackle it without running brand new line . So I was hoping to find a solution other than that here. I'd like to put an interlock kit in, but slots 2 and 4 are taken.

(For those that don't know about an interlock kit, it allows you to backfeed your panel from a portable generator via a 30 Amp breaker that would be placed in slots 2 and 4. You install a plate on the panel cover that makes it impossible for the breaker and main to be hot at the same time. Thus making it code vs. a more expensive manual transfer switch.)

Not only that, but the electrician that wired the house didn't leave much slack in the line so I can't just move every breaker down two slots. Anyone have any idea on what I might be able to do?

MOVE the circuits from slots 2 and 4 to someplace else. Use wire-nuts or other approved splicing methods to extend the wires so they will reach the new breaker location(s).

You MUST use slots 2&4 for the interlockkit to work properly.

I thought about wire nuts, and haven't check, but just assumed it wasn't code to use those in the load center.

If you don't want the splice in the panel install a junction beside the panel. Run your cable into that and then a new piece of NM cable into the panel.
