Help! I need to install a new light fixture!

Basic Gist: My Dad and I are going to attempt to install a ceiling fan/light in our living room. There has never been a ceiling light so we're going to have to cut a hole and lay some electrical for one.

Where this gets tricky:
I've never done this before. My dad did years ago, but he can't get up in to the attic and I'm eager to take up the challenge.

Our house was built in 1962 and we still have the original knob and tube conduit wiring throughout the house.

I'll attach pictures of the ceiling, and area of the attic above it to show where the wire run.

Would anyone care to take up the challenge of "talking me through" this? Or pointing me to a good book/article that would help?
I am currently laid off and have nothing but time, but that also means no money, so I can't afford to hire someone to do this - I don't think I'd want to hire someone either as I said I'm eager for the challenge. I simply don't want to burn down our house or kill myself.

Thank you in advance to your replies!!

p.s. I will try to get better shots with a camera, these were taken with my phone, hence the poor quality.

Are you sure your house was built in 1962 cause knob and tube was stopped in the 1940s

Very certain of this fact. My father bought this house 9 months after it was built.

I was under the impression that knob and tube is not allowed !
So adding to it would also be NOT allowed.
You might have to run a new wire to the panel.
You should check the electrical codes in your area,
and find out what is and isnt allowed with reguard to K & T.
identifing which wire is what in that maze of wires,
is a job in it self, not so easy !

As K&T is not grounded it should not be extended.

Can you get a cable into wherever your panel is?

Show us a picture of your electrical panel (circuit breaker or fuse?) with the cover open.

Pretty unbelievable that K&T could have been installed in 1962.
