Help with dimmer switch and ceiling fixture

No, we don't have a voltage meter.

I suppose I need to call in an electrician...it's just that it's Thanksgiving Sunday here, and people are coming in six hours to eat turkey where at present the step-ladder is sitting...sigh.

An electrician on site can help you figure it out pretty quickly I believe.

Help with dimmer switch and ceiling fixture

Can I tidy things up and cap off the wires and then just turn the breaker back on till we can afford an electrician?

You can, but I think we can get the thing going with a little effort.

I know it sucks having me ask you a bunch of questions, but we've established what's in the switch box, now tell me what's in the ceiling box. Not only wire colors, but how many different cables come into the box.

Okay...in the ceiling there are three wires. One white , one black, one red.

Now that you ask, I am not actually sure if there are clustered black and white wires, like in the switch box, but I can go check. I do know that there are only white, black and red and no ground wire.

Whee! I went up to check on the number of white wires, and it seemed like one of the wires was loose...I tightened everything up, and then put the red and black together at the wall switch, and it came on!

So, now I guess I go put the new dimmer back on, right?

btw, there were two black wires capped off, two white wires attached to the white fixture wire, and a red single wire attached to the black.

The dimmer is on and working, the fixture is up and lovely. Happy Thanksgiving and thank you so much for your valuable time!
