I have a jet ski that has a phantom power drain (if I leave it for 2 days the battery is dead)... I want to make something that will allow me to slip the power wires on an off with ease. (as opposed to bolting/unbolting every time)....
The ideal thing would be a tight female socket (lol) that will snugly fit over the battery terminal like a plug... and of course just pull right off..
The battery is a standard Lawn Mower battery.
I am having trouble finding this type of socket, but then again, I don't really know where to look.
Or, if someone knows of a switch that is rated for that type of amperage (and can be around water).
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
"Phantom power drain" That's a new one! They make a Battery disconnect switch that goes inline with the batery cables. Just look on the internet, they are everywhere.
How many amp-hours is your battery?
If it's 10 A-h and it takes 50 hours to drain it then you're looking for a drain of 200 mA.
Can you post a schematic?
Because it could take hours and hours to find the problem vs 15 minutes to put a disconnect in.
I'm an electrician and I have a Honda 4-wheeler that has both a key shut off and a thumb switch shut off. If I use the thumb, the battery will be dead by morning, if I use the key it will be good for months. I thought about trying to find exactly what was draining the battery one day, then I started to tear into it and found our that I would have to tear all the wiring out of it's protective sleeves, wires ran through the framework, every piece of plastic such as fenders, ect. would need to be removed.
I decided very quickly that I had better things to do with my time than to worry about what the actual cause was when I had a solution already at hand.
I'm sure the OP isn't an electrician. I'm sure he would much rather be riding the JetSki than tearing it apart. I'm also pretty sure that he wouldn't want to pay some mechanic $130 an hour to fix a problem that can be resolved in 15 minutes for $20.
Also, if this were a brand new machine, I would be more concerned with isolating the actual problem. But with this being a 1995 jet ski, it is not really worth a lot of $$$.
